Ash Pale with pronounced grain.very resilient. Car frames, tool handles

Apple Pale toffee colour tight grain. Small ornate items/cupboard handles

Afromosia Dark brown tight grained. Like teak weatherproof

Bubinga Dark red stripy grain. Dense heavy does not polish easily

Brazilian Cedar Pink/red. Plain grained open grain very aromatic. Cigar boxes etc.

Beech White/cream.very plain medium hard. Kitchen utensils/toys etc.

Steamed Beech As above but pink in colour

Boxwood Pale lemon colour very tight grain and heavy. Small ornate objects, chess sets tool handles

Cedar (Western red) Pink pronounced grain, lightweight, semi-weatherproof

Cedar (Lebanon) Pale, strong grain pattern, lightweight, aromatic. Wardrobes,blanket boxes.

Chestnut Medium buiscuit colour, strong grain. Furniture-similar to oak but lighter weight

Cherry Pinkish toffee colour. Tight grain. furniture.

Douglas Fir Softwood. Pale orange/grey. Lightweight. Exterior doors staircases.

English Oak Strong grain pattern toffee colour. Very durable/weatherproof

Elm Very strong grain pattern toffee colour. Chair seats and bowls

Ebony Black or dark striped. Small ornate objects chess pieces.

Iroko Yellow to biscuit colour. Very weatherproof. Gate posts, garden furniture,worktops.

Jarrah Rich dark red. Very heavy and durable. Exterior use and bowls

Jelutong Pale cream colour. Very little grain. Model making and carving.

Lignum Vitae Densest wood. Sinks in water! Very dark.hard. Bowls small items. Previously used to make ships propshaft bearings.

Lemon Wood Slightly lighter alternative to boxwood

Mahogany (Brazilian) Pink/red. Tight grain. Used by traditional furniture makers

Mahogany (West african) Pink/red slightly open grain. Cheaper alternative to Brazilian.

Maple Very pale. Subtle grain. Very hard furniture

Oak (American oak) Similar to English oak. Heavy durable. Furniture and exterior use.

Pine (Scandinavian Pine) Pale pronounced grain. Furniture staircases etc.

Pine (Southern) Yellow. Pale very pronounced grain. Staircases etc.

Poplar (American) Pale cream/green/black streaks. Also known as tulip. Furniture and items for painting

Rosewood Very dark stripy. Hard and dense. Small ornate items.

Sapele Hard mahogany species. Commonly used as veneer furniture etc.

Sycamore White, plain hardwood sometimes found with a ripple in the grain (known as Fiddleback) used for musical instruments.

Satin Wood Pale yellow. Very hard. Used for veneer and small ornate pieces.

Teak Hard durable toffee coloured oily wood. Exterior use –was popular for furniture.

Utile Inexpensive Mahogany species. Open grained. Exterior use.

Walnut (European Walnut) Chocolate brown very pretty. Furniture and gunstocks.

Walnut (American Walnut) Dark purple/brown. Hard furniture etc.

Wenge Dark brown/black Hard brittle. Mainly used for flooring.

Yew Pale cream/deep orange. Hard. Furniture and small items.
